Isn’t it interesting that people seem to be at their very best when they are being creative. The question remains, creative at what? The best thing to add to the mix is ideas. Now it seems to me that to be creative, you need ideas. That leaves the question, “How do you generate or create ideas?” That’s a good question and it recalls to mind a book that I read too many years ago. I think the title was something like “Morphological Creativity”. That book had my mind so activated that I couldn’t sleep for two days. I’ll try to get the idea across and it is quite simple but it really works.
With a piece of paper and a pen write on the top the subject for ideas. For example, Manufacture Boxes. Below that write down a list of types of boxes. Examples could be 1. Jewelry Box, 2. Containers. 3. Packing Boxes. 4. Shoe Boxes. 5. Lock Boxes. 6. Coffins. Etc. Across the sheet write down different materials, dimensions, decorations, time limits, quantities, shipping, etc.
Now you have a work sheet to generate ideas for manufacturing boxes of all kinds.
For each entry down the list you can compare to entries across the list, for example, containers vs. material. Or shoe boxes vs. decorations. Surely you can come up with ideas about decorating shoe boxes. Now to get the idea across, when I started writing this, I didn’t have the foggiest idea that I would be writing about decorating shoe boxes. Now that is an idea. Never think an idea is foolish, even though it may be, it can be used to generate lots more good ideas and a little humor is very helpful. This concept works very well in group brainstorming. Just with what I have put down here, you could use this sheet to generate dozens of ideas. Don’t worry about completing the list, you won’t before your ideas will come flooding into your mind. My biggest problem is keeping on the objective, and hearing the words correctly, but even that can be used to generate ideas. Instead of brainstorming pools, I might find myself brainstorming fools.
